The Environment Agency and British
Waterways established the Boat Safety Scheme in 1997 to promote
safety on the inland waters and navigations in respect of boats,
their installations, components and fuels.
What is the BSS
The Scheme promotes safety in three ways:
The BSS Certificate is a means to reduce the risk to the visitors
and navigation authority employees presented by fires, explosions
and pollution. It is also a means to advise the skipper and crews
of personal risks presented by their own craft. You can find out
more in the red section of the site; getting your boat examined.
The Scheme also offers advice on how to use the boats fuels,
systems and appliances safely. The advice comes from experts in
many fields, including the boating organisations. Having a safe
boat is not enough, how it's used is crucial. Please read more in
the blue section; staying safe - here's
how.
The scheme also act as a source of information about hazards and
safety relating to boats for the navigation authorities and other
organisations. See more in the orange section; who & what - BSS inside out.
We can also order literature, find out how to become an examiner,
find links to other useful sites as well as find out more about the
BSS and boating safety in the black
section - much more info on offer. You also have lots of
opportunities to ask questions, see the questions others have
asked and to see the responses about each section by using the
second row buttons.
